Front Street Community Oven is looking for a full-time Operations and Events Manager to support innovative co-cooking connection and belonging programming. This is a 1 year term position with a good possibility of renewal.

The Front Street Community Oven has operated at Robie Tufts park in the heart of Wolfville since 2019. We host programming where people of all backgrounds connect over the shared activity of cooking and eating together over fire – in a safe, welcoming, intentionally facilitated space. This is more than a community supper. Connecting to each other and the land in this way allows us to address complex social issues in a nourishing and transformative way.

Job Description:

  • The Operations and Events Manager will be responsible for Planning, coordinating & facilitating the operations of our weekly Community Cookouts 
  • Planning & coordinating team building with community and corporate groups, 
  • Planning and coordinating other events
  • Communication related to these activities via social media & newsletters.

 

Further, this role will support the Executive Director in fundraising and sales activities through coordination. 

 

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • At least 3 years of experience in an operations and/or event management position
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • A passion for community building
  • A passion for cooking and food
  • Experience with cooking and/or baking (e.g. as a home cook)
  • Experience in hosting or facilitation will be an asset – comfortable hosting 20-30 person groups 
  • A versatile skillset, demonstrated through the successful management of diverse projects and programs.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects at once with different timelines and thrives on problem solving and organizing (the oven has multiple larger projects each year, and hosts over 50 events per year).

 

Work Environment

  • The community oven has two seasons and therefore the job requirements shift during these seasons, with more community events during the summer and more team building during the winter.
  • Many events happen outdoors, so staff must be comfortable being outdoors on cold, hot and rainy days.
  • We are a small team; you will work directly with the Executive Director, our wonderful volunteers, summer staff, and a few contractors.
  • This role requires physical work (including lifting), as well as computer-based work.
  • This role requires driving and regular access to a vehicle.

 

Detailed Responsibilities:

 

COOKOUT SEASON: MAY – NOVEMBER

 

Managing Volunteers:

  • Recruit, engage, manage, and schedule volunteers
  • Organize regular volunteer appreciation & engagement events 

Planning and Coordinating Community Programming:

  • Coordinate weekly Community Cookouts, taking care of all event details, including buying groceries, arranging supplies & cookware, coordinate volunteers, and help host (Thursday evenings)
  • Plan and coordinate special events & group bookings, taking care of all event management details,  including scheduling food facilitators and volunteers, organizing and purchasing supplies (wood delivery, cookware needed, groceries, tableware), and supporting volunteers and facilitators as needed at the event itself
  • Ensure impact measurement and evaluation of events and programs happens
  • Ensure food supplies, wood, and oven building supplies are ordered 

 

WINTER SEASON: NOVEMBER-MAY

 

Team Building with Community and Corporate Groups:

  • Plan and manage team building experiences for corporate groups at the Oven; these will include food production to provide food access to the community

Co-Coordinate Monthly Community Oven Events 

  • Typically 1-2 winter cookouts max per month

Support Promotions and Communications:

  • Working with the Executive Director, promote and advertise events via print and social media, creating respective materials and collateral to keep stakeholders, funders, and donors engaged
  • Working with the Executive Director, share the story of the Oven through impact measurement and manage overall online presence (website, social media, newsletter)

Supporting Fundraising and Sales:

  •  Alongside Sales Manager and Executive Director, support fundraising and sales efforts by coordinating fundraising events and coordinating  sales of oven products and merchandise

Other Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that invoices are sent and bills are paid, with the support of the Treasurer and the Executive Director
  • Track expenses by project and provide invoices, receipts to the Treasurer in an organized manner
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new initiatives and programming
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that all operations are aligned with the organization’s mission and values

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in an operations and/or event management position
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Experience facilitating and hosting events is an asset
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people
  • Passion for community building and food access initiatives
  • Familiarity with grant applications and reporting is an asset
